BSC Member Honored for Lifetime Service, Leadership Following Wildfires

Dan Mitchell, president of Eagle CDI Inc., has been honored with the S.A. Walters Award.

Named after the man who became the first chairman of what is known today as the Building Systems Councils (BSC), the S.A. Walters Award is the highest honor the councils bestow. The award recognizes a lifetime of achievement in systems-built housing.

“It was an honor to receive this year’s S.A. Walters Award,” said Mitchell. “More than anything, the fact that the award is voted on by former recipients adds so much to the honor.”

A council member since 2007, Mitchell has worn many hats with the BSC. In 2015 he served as council chairman, capping an eight-year run on the BSC Board of Trustees. Mitchell is also a past president of the Sevier County HBA and current president of the HBA of Greater Knoxville.

As part of his duties with the HBA of Greater Knoxville, Mitchell was instrumental in coordinating the association’s response to the devastating wildfire that plagued Gatlinburg and the Greater Smoky Mountains area of Tennessee earlier this year.

A tireless advocate of the benefit of working with NAHB members as well as system-built members, Mitchell helped to develop a consumer guide for individuals rebuilding after the Gatlinburg wildfires. To promote the HBA of Greater Knoxville’s consumer outreach, Mitchell appeared on local ABC affiliate, WATE, urging those effected by the fire to avoid unscrupulous contractors.

On the national level, Mitchell currently serves on the NAHB Global Opportunities Board and the Federation’s Custom Home Builders Committee as second vice chair. Active in BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s political action committee, Mitchell is a Cap Club member and the BSC’s BUILD-PAC trustee.

Educating others about the advantages of systems-built housing is another passion project of Mitchell. In addition to giving multiple presentations at the International Builders’ Show®, he is also a regular speakers at The Log & Timber University, educating consumers and builders at log home shows across the country.
