Two More Examples of Foreign Modular Construction’s Rapid Tech Growth

As most of you have probably noticed, there are more articles on this blog about foreign modular companies and methods than in years past. That is because there is quite a lot more innovation in their methods and technology than in the US.

This is not a bad reflection on US modular but rather an indication that when other nations started gearing up to embrace modular construction they looked at the solid base of design and methods we have been using for decades and decided they could take that, add technology and robotics to jump past us.

These countries also appear to have more relaxed overall requirements for modular as well as better transportation regulations. Add to that governments that are actively funding huge modular projects and you have the formula for an industry that are adding more factories in one year than the US modular industry has in the last two decades.

The first example comes from England.

This two-minute film shows the installation work from early June, when the four two-bedroom homes, which were constructed in a factory, were transported by lorry to the site in Gordon Road, Telford, England up until their official opening last month.

David Hall is head of property at The Wrekin Housing Trust, which is one of the largest social housing providers in the Midlands.

He said: “With a housing shortage, both locally and nationally, the trust commissioned the installation of these modular buildings to demonstrate innovation in tackling the problem.

“We’re really proud of this development and I think this time-lapse video gives a great insight into how modular houses can be installed efficiently while maintaining the quality you get with traditional houses.”

The second example of a rapidly growing modular factory comes from the Philippines.

Modular homes creator Revolution Precrafted has become the first unicorn to emerge from the Philippines after it raised its latest round of funding from Singapore-based venture capital firm K2 VC and others.


The term unicorn is used to describe startups that have achieved a valuation of over $1 billion. In only two years!!!!

Led by real estate developer Robbie Antonio, Revolution is a real estate technology startup that delivers high-design structures and pop-up retail and fitness centres.

This two-year-old startup received $15.4 million in funding from 500 Startups and other investors last March and is looking to expand far beyond the Philippines and have begun searching for opportunities in the US.

Produktif is sourcing global modular design capabilities. This article @ Gary Fleisher is right on. There is a more favorable regulatory and investment environment for modular in Asia and Europe than in the US.

Also, human resource issues (capacity building) and the environmental (cost of energy and population densities) have contributed to accelerated adoption rates of modular methods and automation, giving Europe and Asia a significant head start. Encouraging signs suggest that North America is catching on, moving beyond first generation prototypes.

Now is a terrific time for knowledge transfer and modular up-starts in North America. Interested parties can jump-start and accelerate their learning curves working with already tried and tested modular solutions.
European and Asian methods can be globally sourced and optimized for the many diverse North American regulatory, labor and capital market conditions, effectively dealing with high levels of market fragmentation, which is all doable with the right global modular design attention.
