Clayton Homes Making Inroads into Tiny House Market

Earlier in 2017 Clayton Homes introduced their first home in a new tiny house line called the Designer Series. The first floor plan, the “Low Country”, was designed by Jeffrey Dungan, a well known Architect. Dungan has now designed the second offering for Clayton, the “Saltbox”.

Both homes are built to stringent IRC regulations and are designed to be permanently attached to a foundation. The homes in the Designer Series can be used for a variety of purposes including year-round permanent residence, vacation home, guest home, or accessory dwelling unit.
The Clayton Built® tiny home possesses all the latest in modern home design, both inside and out. Ply Gem® French doors; a white Summit Appliance® range and refrigerator; and tall, 9'5" ceilings in the bedroom provide a roomy living space inside. On the outside, the premium standing seam metal roof, stylish vertical shiplap wood siding with horizontal board and batten are combined to provide a high-quality exterior that are both stylish and built to last. At 450 sq ft, homeowners of the Saltbox won't have to sacrifice having friends over or entertaining. The home is designed to fit a dining room table that seats six, and a covered porch with large overhang means homeowners can utilize outdoor living spaces during different weather conditions. A word to the wise among you. With Clayton pulling the IRC Tiny House market quickly into public view, it might be time to consider dusting off those Park Model home plans we used to build and begin remarketing them as IRC Tiny Houses and let Clayton continue to be the pointy edge of the spear. My crystal ball tells me that state and local governments in all states will soon begin addressing the issue of rewriting the zoning codes to meet the demand for these homes instead of tiny home owners trying to figure out how to circumvent the rules to get their home approved. Don’t confuse these homes with the THOW (tiny house on wheels) folks that would rather design and build their own homes on wheels which is an entirely different market.

Our industry used to have some really wonderful Park Models. Today they can grow a little longer and be over the old sq ft of 399.9. I can't imagine it would take much to give them a new exterior look and build them to pass IRC.

I would love to add them to my business.
