Cardinal Homes to Hire Up to 300 After Bankruptcy

Following bankruptcy, Southside company positioning
to hire as many as 300 workers

New job opportunities are in store for Halifax County, Virginia construction workers just up the road in southern Charlotte County.

Cardinal Homes, a modular homes construction company located in Wylliesburg, VA will start hiring more workers shortly after the sale of the company is finalized. The company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is undergoing a sale and restructuring process.

“Cardinal has been here 50 years, and we’ve traditionally pulled team members from Charlotte, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Halifax, Campbell and Prince Edward counties,” said Bret Berneche, president/ CEO of Cardinal Homes.

The modular homes company’s CEO said the company has secured a prospective buyer, providing the financing for the company to continue operating seamlessly during the bankruptcy case. Other prospective buyers have expressed interest in Cardinal Homes, as well. The sale date is Feb. 13.

“Right now there are 56 employees at Cardinal. I would anticipate hiring over the next two years as many as 300 or more employees,” Berneche said.

The recession of 2008 hit the housing market and the banks hard, including Cardinal’s bank, Wachovia. Cardinal Homes was forced to reduce its payroll and streamline its operations as a result.

The company’s sale and restructuring will bring its number of team members back up to pre-recession numbers, Berneche noted. He said former Cardinal team members are welcome to apply for the new positions.

The company is accepting job applications from workers with skills in framing, electrical, plumbing, drywall, paint, trim and flooring, as well as unskilled workers interested in learning the trade. The building process for modular homes and work environment is slightly different than that of a typical construction site, Berneche explained.

“You work inside, out of the weather. It’s a lot more comfortable than a traditional (construction) job site,” Berneche said.

Cardinal Homes specializes in custom single-family modular homes, offering a variety of floor plans to customers. Buyers have the option to customize the details of their homes from the cabinets to the flooring.

Production at Cardinal Homes’ current location began in 1970, and the Berneche family took ownership of the company in 1992.
