Montana Ending Federal Unemployment to Get People Back to Work

Montana is ending its expansion of unemployment benefits — including a $300 weekly increase in aid — more than two months early and some think other states will take similar measures before the labor market recovers.

Montana is substituting that aid with a one-time $1,200 return-to-work bonus to address a labor shortage. The unemployment programs in question have been in place nationwide since March 2020.

With businesses begging for people to fill available positions, many believe that ending the Federal program early will motivate people to begin filling out applications. The construction and restaurant industries have been especially hit hard.
